Team motivation is not as easy as it appears.

There are many factors that makeup the psychological dynamic of your team. Add to this the fact that people are emotional and unpredictable, and you realize you have a tough job of team motivation on your hands.

A person that is tired or emotional will react differently to a person that is not. There are numerous other factors that affect team motivation.

Here are some elements that you can influence or control:

1. Team Motivation Comes from a “Need” to Keep Their Job

This is only one of the motivations a staff member is prone to, and many people think it is more powerful than it is. The truth is that a lot of your staff are going to be looking for other jobs when they work for you.

This is done partially because they do not like their job, but also to relieve the feeling that they “need” a job.

If they feel as if they could leave at any time, then they are not prone to the horrible feeling that they are trapped because they “need” a job to pay the bills.

Needing the job is one motivator, but it is not nearly as important as you think it is and should not be exploited too much because you will push your staff into leaving.

They will appear to be responsive to your behavior until they suddenly leave without notice.

2. Team Motivation by Feeling Wanted

This is far more important to people than many people realize. The idea that they are needed is very good for motivation. If a person hears that the place went to hell on their day off, then they start to feel a little more wanted and needed.

If they go into work and they feel they are not needed at all, then you will often find their motivation hit an all-time low.

3. They Are Motivated by the Pride They Take in Their Work

There are many people that take great pride in their work, even if their job seems to be one of little recognition or importance.

There are a lot of people that integrate their job into their overall personality and higher ego.

If you can use this pride correctly, then you can keep a member of staff motivated by bolstering their pride in the right places.

4. They Are Motivated by Feeling Like They Don’t Need the Job

There are many people that feel motivated by the idea that they do not need a job. This concept mixes well with the concepts mentioned above, such as how people look for other jobs whilst working for you, and how people like to feel they are needed.

There are many people that will feel motivated by the fact that they can quit at any time.

They feel that they are not trapped to the point where they are actually doing the company a favor by turning up. This is only part of their internal dialog, and you are unlikely to hear it said aloud, but you could use this idea to help motivate your team a keep them motivated.

5. Do Not Reward Negative Behavior

For example, do not go easy on a person because he or she is tired, feels ill or has a hangover. If you go even slightly easy on them, then they will do it again and again.

You will inadvertently teach them to misbehave in order to receive special treatment.

6. Liking the Boss is Not Respecting the Boss

Just because your staff like you does not mean they respect you. They respect the fact you appreciate them that you standup for them, that you control the situation, and that you keep them out of trouble.

They respect your ability to command and get things done.

Being liked is not the same as being respected, and you need to be respected if you want the ability to motivate your team.

7. Being Afraid of the Boss is Not Respecting the Boss

Just because your staff recoil when you walk by does not mean they respect you.

They may suck up to you from the break of dawn to the dead of night, but the truth is that if the staff fears you in any way, then they will betray you at the first chance they get, and they will be merciless when they do.

8. Aim to Be Fair

Being fair is not always an option, and if you are in a situation where you have to be unfair, you should not make excuses.

You just need to make sure that what you say is done. If you make excuses, then you are telling your team that you are wrong and therefore they lose their motivation to work for you.
