Leadership Characteristics

Possessing certain leadership skills and characteristics may perhaps allow a leader greater success. Research has shown that personal leadership characteristics are linked directly to leader behavior.

Leadership characteristics affect three specific attributes:

  • Financial soundness
  • Quality of products and services

Identification of leadership characteristics related to positive outcome performance may perhaps form the condition for selection of leaders to key management positions.

Having charisma and the ability to attract people based on a congenial and magnetic personality

Considerate of the needs of others and courteous to those he or she leads.

Always trustworthy, genuine, honest, and truthful.

  • Helpful

Willing to provide a supportive hand, willing, caring, and obliging.

  • Intelligent

Showing the ability to be clever, wise, sharp adaptable, intellectual, logical, creative, and reasonable.

  • Perceptive

Having the ability to visualize, be insightful, sharp, sensitive, observant, and aware of his or her surroundings, and showing understanding and compassion .

A positive or negative impact that leadership characteristics and behavior have will drive the overall effectiveness that is acceptable to an organization, whether it is in business, education, government, or athletics.

Negative Leadership Characteristics

Two leadership characteristics that may prove harmful and create organizational decline or failure are:

  • Risk aversion
  • Self-centered

Risk aversion is a reluctance to pursue an outcome with an uncertain return, and being self-centered relates to a belief that individuals should pursue only those areas that affect self-interest.

Furthermore, leaders are doomed to failure by possessing characteristics such as arrogance, cautiousness, skepticism, and distrust.

I’m sure there are other negative leadership characteristics to avoid, and they are easily identifiable.

Just ask this question – “What types of personal characteristics attract me to a leader?”  Knowing the type of characteristics you value will provide a foundation for understanding perhaps what others value in a leader, too.
